The word Panchangam literally refers to “five limbs.” In traditional Indian calendrical practice, those five limbs are Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. Together they describe different aspects of a day through astronomical calculation and traditional interpretation.

Why was Panchangam created?

Historically, Panchanga traditions helped communities coordinate recurring time cycles and observances in a world where lunar phases, seasons, local sunrise and agricultural rhythms mattered deeply.

How the astronomy works

At the computational level, several Panchanga elements come from the changing celestial longitudes of the Sun and Moon and from local time factors such as sunrise.

There is not just one Panchangam

Different Panchangams can use different calculation traditions, month conventions, solar or lunisolar frameworks, regional rules and local sunrise. That is why two published Panchangams may not always show identical timings.

Panchangam across India

Regional calendars differ because communities may follow different month systems, solar transitions, New Year conventions and festival-decision rules.

Tamil Panchangam

Strong solar-calendar usage for month reckoning, alongside Panchanga elements used for observances and timing.

Telugu Panchangam

Commonly uses an Amanta lunisolar month framework for religious and festival reckoning.

Kannada Panchanga

Also widely uses an Amanta lunisolar framework, with regional conventions and festival rules.

Malayalam Calendar

The Kollam Era calendar is solar in month structure, while Panchanga calculations continue to be used for ritual timing.

North Indian Panchang

Many traditions use Purnimanta lunar-month naming, especially for religious calendar presentation.

Gujarati Calendar

Uses a regional lunisolar framework with distinctive New Year convention following Diwali.

Bengali Calendar

Uses a regional solar calendar structure, with local rules for festivals and observances.

Odia Panjika

Uses regional calendrical and astronomical traditions, with local conventions for ritual and festival timing.

Regional practices are not always uniform even within one language or state. Almanac publishers, temples and lineages may follow different computational or interpretive conventions.

Why do two Panchangams sometimes disagree?

Calculation Model

Different astronomical algorithms or traditional computational methods can shift calculated end-times.

Location

Sunrise, sunset and local civil time change with latitude, longitude and time zone.

Month Convention

Amanta and Purnimanta systems assign month boundaries differently.

Festival Rule

A tradition may require a Tithi to prevail at sunrise, midnight, moonrise or another specified period.

14 · Muhurta

Muhurta is more than “good time vs bad time”

Traditional Muhurta assessment may combine Panchanga elements, purpose-specific rules, local timings and lineage or regional conventions. It is best understood as a rule-based traditional timing framework rather than a universal scientific verdict on outcomes.

Purpose

The rule set may differ for marriage, travel, temple ritual, house entry, education or another activity.

Conditions

Tithi, Nakshatra, Vara and other factors can be included depending on the tradition.

Interpretation

Traditional meaning should be presented as tradition, not confused with astronomical measurement.
